Our Ethics

Food is never just food—it’s history, identity, and power. At through food, we interrogate the systems shaping what we eat and connect personal stories to larger social, political, and economic forces.

Our ethics are principles, not policies. They guide every decision we make, from the stories we tell to the collaborations we pursue, ensuring we remain transparent, accountable, and independent in an era of disinformation.

How We Work

Editorial Independence

  • Our team makes all editorial decisions. We do not accept influence from donors, sponsors, or external collaborators.

  • We reject partnerships with entities whose actions or values conflict with our mission.

Transparency

  • We disclose all funding sources, sponsorships, and partnerships.

  • Mistakes are corrected promptly and visibly, with clear explanations of what was wrong and how it was fixed.

Rigorous Journalism

  • Every story is thoroughly researched and fact-checked, with diverse perspectives and responsible sourcing.

  • We go beyond “what happened” to examine the broader systems at play and ask why these stories matter.

Equity in Reporting

  • We amplify marginalized voices and actively dismantle colonial narratives in food reporting.

  • Our platform prioritizes new perspectives and emerging voices, particularly from communities often excluded from mainstream narratives.

Who Owns through food?

through food is owned and operated by its team. As a non-profit society under the B.C. Societies Act, our decisions reflect our shared mission and commitment to independent journalism.

Corrections

  • Factual errors are corrected immediately and noted in the original story.

  • Updates that add context or clarity are transparently labelled with explanations of why they matter.

Our Approach to Journalism

We believe journalism should challenge systems, not just describe them. Our stories connect food to the broader forces shaping our world—climate, labour, health, and culture.

  • We aim to create a record of the present that illuminates the systems behind what we eat and how we live.

  • Our work prioritizes depth, context, and lived experiences over surface-level narratives.

Accountability

Our audience is part of our process. If you see something we can improve, share your feedback. We’re here to listen, learn, and grow.
